AIChE Courses Overview

For over 40 years, Jenike & Johanson engineers have delivered effective training on bulk material flow principles at meetings sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).  Training has not only been provided to chemical engineers, but also to many mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers.  Our AIChE courses can be taken at public offerings (meetings) throughout the year or at any time via web-based access.

Our AIChE courses

Flow of Solids in Bins, Hoppers, Feeders, and Chutes

Our popular “Flow of solids in bins, hoppers, feeders, and chutes” two-day course continues to be one of AIChE’s top three courses based on attendance.  You will learn proven design and troubleshooting principles for handling bulk solids in bins, hoppers, feeders, and transfer chutes for safe and trouble-free plant operation.

In this course, you will learn:

  • differences between bulk solids and liquids
  • cause of common flow problems
  • types of flow patterns in storage silos, bins, and hoppers
  • how flow properties of bulk solids are measured
  • effective feeder design principles
  • how to handle fine powders
  • mechanisms of segregation and solutions to these costly problems
  • how flow aid devices work
  • principles for transfer chute design
  • real-life industrial case histories that illustrate complex concepts

The course is routinely offered four times per year throughout the USA.  Click here for a detailed outline, fee, course locations and dates, registration information, and number of professional development hours (PDHs) or continuing education units (CEUs) received for taking this course.

Pneumatic Conveying of Bulk Solids

Another popular AIChE course presented by Jenike & Johanson engineers is “Pneumatic conveying of bulk solids”.  In this one-day course you will learn how to apply practical design and troubleshooting principles to improve the efficiency, safety, and reliability of pneumatic conveying systems transporting powders and bulk solids.

In this course, you will learn:

  • the four key components of a pneumatic conveying system
  • the modes of transport (i.e., dilute and dense phase conveying)
  • the general state diagram and its use in system design
  • selection of gas mover, line charger (feeder), pipeline layout and elbow type
  • selection of solids separator (e.g., cyclone, filter, bag house)
  • dense phase conveying technology
  • how to troubleshoot elbow wear, particle attrition, buildup, and plugging

This course is offered four times per year throughout the USA.  Click here for a detailed outline, fee, course locations and dates, registration information, and number of professional development hours (PDHs) or continuing education units (CEUs) received for taking this course.

AIChE offers a “combo savings” by taking these two courses at the same location.

Online Training

Web-Based Training

Web-based training has key benefits of cost-savings, increased course access, and convenience.  Jenike & Johanson has partnered with AIChE to develop on-line versions of our two most popular courses.

Flow of Solids in Bins, Hoppers, Feeders, and Chutes

Jenike & Johanson’s “Flow of solids in bins, hoppers, feeders, and chutes” is now available on-line through AIChE’s eLearning center.  This course is presented through ten modules, each about one hour long.  Each learning module is followed by a quiz, and passing of the final exam is required to receive a course completion certificate.

Also available on-line is a one hour seminar on “Why bulk solids behave differently than liquids”.  This is a high quality presentation on bulk solids handling fundamentals, and is an excellent preview of the more comprehensive on-line AIChE training course “Flow of solids in bins, hoppers, feeders, and chutes”.  This webinar is part of AIChE’s ChemE On Demand series.

Pneumatic Conveying of Bulk Solids

In January 2013, Jenike & Johanson’s “Pneumatic conveying of bulk solids” course became available on-line through AIChE’s eLearning center.  This course is presented through five modules each about one hour long.  Each learning module is followed by a quiz, and passing of the final exam is required to receive a course completion certificate.
