Sending Samples to Our USA Laboratories

Below are general instructions for sample quantity, shipping, and hazardous communication requirements for our USA laboratories.  We can work with a wide range of sample sizes, and routinely work with samples that are very limited in quantity (e.g, 50 grams).

Sample Quantity

Bench-scale tests (e.g., cohesive strength, bulk density, particle size)

Typically, a five-gallon (20 liter) sample is required of the fine fraction, minus 1/4 in. (6 mm), of the sample to be tested.

Materials with a significant percentage or over 1/4 in . (6mm) particles may require a larger sample volume.

We prefer to receive samples shipped in containers no larger than 30-gallon fiber drums.

If multiple moisture contents are to be analyzed, please supply enough sample for testing all moisture contents simultaneously.

Pharmaceutical and other high value Samples

Given the high cost or limited available quantity of many pharmaceutical materials, sending a five-gallon sample for testing is not practical.  We have in some cases been able to perform tests with as little at 50 g  or less of material. Our typical suite of tests for pharmaceutical solids requires a half-gallon (≈ 1.5 liter) quantity, though smaller amounts can be accommodated knowing that a portion of the material may be re-used in testing.

Pneumatic conveying, fluidization, or abrasive wear

Pneumatic conveying tests typically require two 55-gallon (400 liters) drums of the sample.

Fluidization tests typically require a 5-gallon (20 liter) sample.  If air-assisted discharge or large-scale fluidization is to be performed, then two 55-gallon (400 liters) drums are needed.

Abrasive wear tests on one wall surface typically require two 55-gallon (400 liter) drums.

Sample Shipping

Samples should be bagged in plastic and packaged in airtight containers to prevent contamination and loss or gain of moisture. Samples must be shipped prepaid.  Sample shipping location depends upon what tests are to be performed.

Environmental, Health & Safety Regulations

We require the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) on any sample containing hazardous substances as described in OSHA standards, to comply with the requirements of the Federal Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). Click for an example of a complete SDS for an example material; note only for illustration purposes and not an actual SDS.

Send one copy of the applicable SDS to the Jenike & Johanson Project Engineer via email before shipping the sample, and attach a second copy to the outside of the shipping container.

Testing cannot begin until we receive an SDS.

Sample Return Upon Completion of Testing

It is our policy to return all material samples, hazardous or not because federal and state environmental protection laws have become strict and complex.

We require a sample return address, including the name of the responsible individual who will receive the samples.  Please complete a Sample Return Form.  Send the completed form via email (to your Jenike & Johanson main contact) before shipping the sample(s), and attach a copy to the outside of the shipping container.  Testing cannot begin until we receive a completed Sample Return Form.
