Jenike & Johanson Expands Its Global Headquarters
May 13, 2014 – Tyngsboro, MA – Jenike & Johanson conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for their office expansion on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at their global headquarters on 400 Business Park Drive. The firm moved into their current office space in 2006, and continued growth has dictated that they expand to accommodate increased staff and laboratory needs. This represents nearly a 75% increase to their current operation.
Alumina Powder Silo Retrofit Improves Product Quality
Alumina is a fine powder that is used in the manufacture of aluminum, abrasives, refractory material, and various household products. The quality and consistency of the alumina, which can vary within each railcar, can affect the manufacturing process. Some processes can detect and compensate for gradual changes without any significant loss of product quality. However, rapid changes may result in a significant loss of finished product because of unacceptable variations.

Meet Isabel Jofré, Jarant Johnson, and Terry Tan
Isabel Jofré works as a project engineer in Jenike & Johanson’s Chile office. Her field of expertise includes the design of stockpiles, bins, and hoppers.
Jarant Johnson joined the Jenike & Johanson team as a project engineer in August 2013, and has been involved in materials testing and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) in our Australia office.
Terry Tan, a senior project engineer at Jenike & Johanson, used to work for Schenck Process Australia in the Bulk Materials Handling Weighing and Automation department.

Silos are one of the most critical pieces of equipment in industrial facilities and, at the same time, one of the least understood. When designing a process in an industrial plant, it is assumed that all bulk materials will be handled reliably. However, as these processes increase in complexity and size due to plant improvements and greater global demand for products, many storage silos are designed or modified to discharge eccentrically.
Chemical Engineering Progress – Ten Steps to an Effective Bin Design
The design process for silos, bins, and hoppers is often thought of as a “black art,” known by only a chosen few. However, a proven, practical method for storage bin process design has been in use for over 60 years. Just as a pump must be designed specifically for the liquid it will handle, so, too, must a silo be designed for a particular powder or bulk solid. The characteristics of the material being handled will dictate the storage vessel design.
