Biomass, wood, and paper are pursued for their good combustion capabilities; however, they are also renown for their poor handling properties.  Though biomass heating characteristics can be similar to traditional fossil fuels, its low bulk density requires large volumes of material be stored, reclaimed, conveyed, processed, and fed into a process.  Paper-based products can include applications in towel/tissue or papermaking for newsprint or magazines, though the papermaking business is experiencing consolidation and reduced demand due to massive growth in electronic publishing.  Reliable chip feed to pre-steamers and digesters is a necessity for maintaining market competitiveness.

Common Biomass, Wood, Paper Industry Challenges

Handling of biomass or biofuels can be difficult due to the interlocking behavior of the stringy and elongated particles.  Poor flow of biomass in hoppers and storage equipment is routine.  Many biomass feed-stocks are cohesive and thus prone to erratic feed into processes.  Material flow obstructions will lead to process inefficiencies, thermal generation interruptions, and increased equipment maintenance.  In addition, biofuel consistency can vary drastically, increasing processing complexity and need for specialized equipment for size reduction, screening, and drying.  Proper selection of biomass, wood, or paper storage and feeding equipment is critical for this industry given the large amounts of material handled at a plant and the materials’ tendency to rot, spoil, and spontaneously combust.  Dust explosions are also common given the materials’ strong ignition potential.
