Modeling the effect of particle size distribution and press speed on press feed rate stability

Tom Baxter presents on how two-phase (powder / interstitial gas) flow behavior can occur in a press feed system and result in problems such as tableting rate limitations, erratic feed to the press feed frame and out-of-specification tablets. A mathematical model was used to analyze the effect of several key flow properties on two-phase flow behavior, particularly the effect of the particle size distribution and permeability of the material.
